Guidance for Families
GCSEs & IGCSEs
for Homeschoolers
Everything you need to know about sitting official qualifications as a home-educated student in the UK β and how Iman British Online School prepares your child every step of the way.
Do homeschooled students get real GCSEs?
Yes β absolutely. There is no legal barrier to a home-educated child sitting GCSEs or IGCSEs and receiving the exact same certificates as any student in a mainstream school. The qualifications are identical and fully recognised by UK universities, sixth forms, and employers.
The process requires a little more planning than for school-registered students, because home-educated pupils sit as private candidates at an independent exam centre rather than through their school. But with the right preparation and support, it is straightforward β and Iman British Online School guides every family through it.
GCSE or IGCSE β which is right?
GCSE
- β¦Most widely recognised qualification in England
- β¦Mix of exams and coursework (varies by subject)
- β¦Coursework elements can be harder to manage as a private candidate
IGCSE (International GCSE)
- β¦Assessed by exam only β no coursework required
- β¦Ideal for homeschooled and private candidates
- β¦Equally recognised by UK universities and sixth forms
- β¦Offered by Cambridge International (CIE) and Edexcel
β¦ At Iman British Online School, we recommend IGCSEs for most of our GCSE students due to the exam-only format.
The Process
How It Works β Step by Step
Choose your subjects and exam board
Start by confirming which subjects your child wants to sit and at which level (GCSE or IGCSE). At Iman British Online School, we teach to the specifications of the main UK exam boards across all our GCSE subjects. We'll advise you on which board suits your child's strengths and the subjects they're studying with us.
Find an exam centre that accepts private candidates
As a home-educated student, your child will sit exams as a private (external) candidate at an approved exam centre. This could be a local school, college, or dedicated examination centre. The best starting point is the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) private candidates list β you can search by postcode, qualification type, and exam board.
Contact the centre well in advance
Don't leave this late. Exam centres fill their private candidate slots quickly, and entry deadlines are typically in October or November for the following summer's exams. Contact your chosen centre directly, confirm they accept private candidates for your required subjects, ask about any admin fees, and obtain their registration forms.
Register and pay the exam fees
Each exam centre sets its own fees for private candidates, which typically cover the exam board entry fee plus an administration charge. You'll need to submit completed registration forms, any required ID, and payment by the centre's deadline. Keep copies of all paperwork.
Prepare β and let Iman School do the heavy lifting
This is where Iman British Online School comes in. Our GCSE programme covers the full specification for each subject, taught by qualified teachers who know exactly what the examiners are looking for. Every lesson is live and recorded, so your child can revise from day one. We run regular mock exams and past paper sessions in the lead-up to the summer series.
Sit the exams and collect results
Exams are typically sat in May and June. Results are released in August. Your child collects results directly from the exam centre, and the qualifications are identical to those taken by students in mainstream schools β fully recognised by UK universities, sixth forms, colleges, and employers worldwide.
Finding a Centre
How to Find an Exam Centre
The official starting point is the JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) private candidates list, which is updated each year and allows you to search by postcode.
π Search JCQ Private Candidates ListIn addition to the JCQ list, it is worth contacting:
- β¦Local secondary schools β some accept private candidates directly
- β¦Further education colleges β often more flexible than schools
- β¦Independent schools in your area
- β¦Dedicated private examination centres
